Life of Goh Beng Kwan

2020 - 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the lives and livelihoods of many all around the world. For Goh, whose pre-COVID calendar revolved around constant travel, having everything screech to a grinding halt in a matter of weeks meant that his entire life had been upended with the government-imposed lockdown. From initial reactions of fear and anxiety with the expected change of plans, to the eventual feelings of hope and gratitude for a new found focus on family, Goh’s latest body of work turns away from his surroundings and explores his internal landscape, depicting an emotional journey that many will relate to as a universal experience.

Understand Mr Goh Beng Kwan's art thinking process and witness how he completes one of his mixed media work "Luminous Landscape" in this video.
He is seen working on a special luminous canvas that changes colour with the direction of light. This work was recently exhibited in Mr Goh's respective exhibition - #GBK85

Strong and spritely at age 86, Goh continues to strive for change and progress, refusing to succumb to any comfort stagnancy might offer. While COVID-19 may have taken away the possibility of keeping his schedule packed to the brim with overseas trips as he once did, Goh has not allowed this to be a setback and instead has taken the opportunity to reframe his perspective, putting the focus on the personal as opposed to the physical and external.
