Singapore Turf Club
1 Turf Club Ave, Singapore
Resplendent Wealth, 1999
Glass, Arcylic and Barissol
As its name suggests, this artwork denotes impressive wealth, accumulated in jewels. It symbolises good fortune, wealth and prosperity, a connotation with which the Singapore Turf Club and its members can empathise easily. The underlying concept is based on the correlation between wealth and the ownership of precious ornaments of gold, silver, bronze and copper as well as exquisite gems such as ruby, turquoise, jade, pearls and diamonds. For many people, these jewels become treasured collections and so they are re-created for this artwork in familiar shapes synonymous with wealth.
Goh’s chosen materials sparkle and shine and thus exude a feeling of brightness and freshness, illuminating the building. Their bright colours demand the visitor’s immediate attention upon entry into the building. The colours are intentionally auspicious: red, orange, gold and green. Red signifies good luck; gold, wealth, while green, also the colour of jade, refers to all living things, thriving in their natural environment.
