Wealth and Abundance, 2001
Glass, Acrylic and Barissol
This work conceptualises the close relationship between good fortune acquired through ownership of precious ornaments made from gold, silver, bronze and copper, and exquisite gems such as rubies and diamonds. These jewels are extremely precious to their owners and also proclaim their owners’ wealth, prosperity and good luck, as with the red ruby for example; the may even signal the owner’s proximity to the tranquillity and abundance of mother nature, as with jade-green, the colour of living plants in their natural environment, particularly the lushly verdant tropical environment. The artwork features sparkling reds and gold against lighter shades of blue and green, while showcasing clear colours as stars in the sky. These stars add glitter in daylight and sparkle like jewels against the night sky. The lower portion of vibrant bronze, copper and purples is again speckled with rich gold, reds and yellows that reference precious gems and metals found in abundance in the ground. The mural is visible from the street level through the clear glass panel. This sparkling gem of a work never fails to catch the eye of any passer-by, day or night.
