Goh studied in Nanyang Primary School and the Chinese High School, where Chinese calligraphy was one of the subjects taught. His strong foundation in calligraphy helped him master traditional Chinese ink painting while under the tutelage of pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi. Goh practised by painting plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, and bamboo. While at the Art Students’ League of New York, Goh received high praise from his art teachers for his innovative use of Chinese brushwork in his artworks. Despite using a variety of media in his works over the years, ink painting remains at the heart of his practice. Goh has developed a unique style of ink painting by using vibrant colours like reds, greens and blues, to depict life in the tropics, reflecting his love for the scenic views of rural landscapes in Southeast Asia.
