Underwater World, 1996

Mixed Media on Canvas

In the 1990s, Goh Beng Kwan travelled to Bali and experienced the vibrant seascape there when he went snorkelling. Goh’s underwater adventure to the deep blue waters of Bali opened his eyes to the brilliant coral reefs and aquatic life there, which he abstractly rendered in this painting. Shades of teal, cobalt, and yellow illuminate the canvas and at the top of the painting, Goh highlights the light that shines through the water’s surface. Goh also decorated his seascape with orange fishes, pink corals, and turquoise sea grass, adding texture to the canvas with impasto. Underwater World is now displayed at Conrad Centennial Singapore, where viewers can see the large painting in-person in all its splendour.
