Life of Goh Beng Kwan
In 1989, Goh Beng Kwan was awarded the Singapore Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts, the country’s highest artistic accolade. The award recognised his contributions to the Singapore arts scene in the form of his large-scale collage paintings that demonstrate the versatility of the medium, and acknowledged his influence on a large following of collage artists in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
His solo exhibition in 1991, Journeys, exhibited a wide range of works, including traditional paintings among more recently completed collage and mixed media pieces, demonstrating his versatility and proficiency as an artist. Yet to exhaust the potential of collage, Goh continued to refine his unique style in the medium, reintroducing a more vibrant and energetic palette to his works, perhaps inspired by the new sights from his frequent travels overseas. His compositions began take on more organic forms, introducing the freedom of painting while retaining the immediacy and depth of meaning that collage could bring to his works.
